On a scenographic project by Studio Fuksas, the video project for Giacomo Puccini's Turandot, directed by Francesco Micheli at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, transforms Turandot into an avatar of one of the many hikikomori, within a video game, playing between the virtual world and the fairy tale. Similarly, the characters of the opera transform into the protagonists of a video game in which the opera takes place.
The idea is in harmony with the structure designed by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas: a fixed structure that becomes a screen, a place in continuous transformation on which elaborated images are projected, of places that become an element of contact between fantasy and reality.
A fairy tale in a contemporary key.
From the words of director Francesco Micheli: “We imagined that behind Turandot there was one of those many hikikomori, a girl locked in her room who invented a video game in which Turandot is her avatar. A fantastic creature that closely resembles her, and that challenges all the patrons of the great empire of the Internet in a game where those who die lose their head, or rather, lose their virtual life. Calaf, on the other hand, is a young nameless man, an antisocial prince who, it is hoped, will melt the ice that blocks the young Turandot, and thus the girl behind her, representing the many young people today who live in this condition.”
